Horizontal Belt Filters for FGD Gypsum Processing

Horizontal belt filters are highly effective at processing the synthetic gypsum product derived from flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems at electric power plants. Compositech manufactures the largest, most effective horizontal belt filters in the industry. To oxidize the slurry, it is put through a reaction vessel where oxidizing agents are added. The reaction converts the sulfites to sulfates. A small amount of polymer is added to flocculate the material to form larger particles making it more easily filtered. The slurry is then processed with our horizontal belt filter. The slurry is washed, the chlorides are removed, and the cake is dried making the final product ready for shipment or disposal.

A horizontal belt filter is more efficient than a drum filter in this type of application, since gravity assists in the cake formation rather than working against it. The slurry doesn’t settle to the bottom of a vat nor does it build up in the tank or agitator assemblies since these are not a part of the equipment. While horizontal belt vacuum filters are not maintenance free, they are the most efficient and cost effective means of processing FGD gypsum slurry. These filters are capable of achieving up to 90% solids content in the cake and 100 ppm of chloride. To obtain this efficiency, the cake is washed two or three times on the filter through a countercurrent system.

Horizontal belt filters have been widely used in the Eastern United States for a number of years with a focus on limiting landfill loading. Many of these plants are converting to produce synthetic gypsum for sale as an extender for mined gypsum. Some of our customers use the horizontal belt filtration system only to dewater while some follow a complete process scheme in order to produce marketable synthetic gypsum.

Compositech has been providing specifically designed horizontal belt filter stations in a myriad of configurations since 1991. Our most recent design, initally  manufactured for the TXU-URS horizontal belt filter project, is a modular, 4-meter wide horizontal belt filter that can easily be sized and resized according to each customer's needs. Each module is 2.5 meters long and increases the filtration area by 10 square meters. To change the size of the filter, you simply add or remove modules. The modules are easily transported and bolted together for final assembly on site. They are interchangeable and can be moved from location to location if needed.

In addition to our Compositech horizontal belt filter, we stock replacement parts for other filter brands including gaskets, seals, drainage belts, bearings, bearing housings, wear strips, slide strips, and edge trackers.

We manufacture Compositech replacement parts for Andritz, Beloit Jones™, Celleco™, Dorr-Oliver®, Eimco®, Filtres Philippe, IMPCO™, Komline-Sanderson® and most other brands of horizontal belt filters. Our replacement parts meet or exceed the quality and material of OEM components.

Compositech is not an authorized replacement parts supplier or service supplier for GL&V®, Celleco™, Beloit Jones™, IMPCO™, Dorr-Oliver®, Komline-Sanderson®, or Eimco® brands of process equipment or parts therefore. Nor is Compositech in any way associated with GL&V USA Inc. or its affiliated entities or with FLSmidth A/S or its affiliated entities. All Compositech replacement parts are manufactured by and warranted by Compositech and not by the original equipment manufacturer.
