Power Plant Waste Processing
Power plants using coal and oil as fuel generally require a scrubbing system for the exhaust fumes, or flue gas, which contains various amounts of sulfur. Frequently these plants use a wet process in which a lime slurry neutralizes the sulfuric acid resulting in the formation of gypsum. The gypsum slurry is dewatered by either a horizontal belt filter or rotary drum filter.
Compositech manufactures both types of filters for our power plant customers who use them to process the byproduct of the flue gas desulfurization scrubbers and produce synthetic gypsum. The synthetic gypsum can then be sold for the manufacture of wallboard and other materials. The power plant can also reuse the water extracted in this filtration process rather than paying the costs to landfill it. For high efficiency requirements, Compositech's horizontal belt filter provides the best performance. When no cake washing is required and higher chloride content in the cake is acceptable, our lower cost rotary drum filter is adequate to meet the process requirement.
Our customers have been pleased with the results of dewatering and reclaiming these wastes. Not only are they able to greatly reduce land fill usage and cut back on transportation costs, but also this process is better for the environment and allows the waste to become a revenue item rather than an expense.
In addition to manufacturing our own design of horizontal belt filter and rotary drum filter, Compositech also provides replacement parts and filter rebuild services for other filter brands and other types of filters. Our goal in manufacturing filter replacement parts is to offer upgrades to filter peformance and reliability. Our parts meet vigorous standards for quality and durability and are designed to offer increased filter performance and lower maintenance costs. Our components meet or beat the quality of the original equipment used by the filter manufacturer.

Significant Accomplishments
In 2002 Compositech was awarded the TXU-URS Horizontal Belt Filter project. This filter, completed in 2003, is a 4-meter wide unit with ten modules totaling 100 sq. meters of filtration area for the TXU facility. It is the largest and most productive filter of its kind, and is capable of processing over 100 tons of material per hour. This horizontal belt filter is used to process the gypsum byproduct of the FGD scrubbers allowing TXU to sell this synthetic gypsum for use in the manufacture of wallboard and other materials. At 4 meters wide, this "T-REX" filter is the widest horizontal belt filter in operation in the United States.
